ChatGPT will be able to remember the entire history of communication with the user

OpenAI has announced a major update to ChatGPT’s personalization and memorization features. Now, for some users, the chatbot will be able to remember information from all previous dialogues, adapting answers based on the accumulated interaction experience. About this informs ArsTechnica.

ChatGPT will gradually accumulate more data about the user to provide personalized responses, going beyond simple facts. Previously, OpenAI implemented the “Memory” function, which allowed to store a limited amount of information, using it in future conversations. Often the user had to specify what to remember, although sometimes the system initiated it on its own.

The new ChatGPT UI update replaces the single memory toggle with two separate options: “Refer to Saved Memories” (traditional memory) and “Refer to Chat History” (a new option). The latter allows the system to use all previous conversations as a context, forming appropriate reactions in the future.

Unlike the previous version, the information obtained through the chat history feature cannot be viewed or edited by the user – it can only be turned on or off. It is noted that users can completely deactivate the new feature, and it will not work in “Temporary Chats”. According to OpenAI, the update will eventually be available for corporate, team, and education accounts as well, but a specific launch date has not yet been announced.
