Children’s shoes under the walls of the Russian embassy: Sofia remembered the dead Ukrainian children

The fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine became an occasion for a symbolic action in the center of the Bulgarian capital, where representatives of the political force “Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria” addressed the topic of the deaths of Ukrainian children through a public gesture of remembrance. They laid out children’s shoes outside the Russian embassy in Sofia, turning the space in front of the embassy into a silent reminder of the losses suffered by Ukraine.

Action in Bulgaria in honor of Ukrainian children

As reported by The Sofia Globe, the event was initiated by politicians from the Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria party, who On February 24, an action was held near the Russian Embassy in Sofia. The choice of date was due to the fact that this day marks another anniversary of the beginning of the Russian Federation’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine.

In front of the diplomatic institution building, the participants laid out children’s shoes as a visual image representing children whose lives were cut short as a result of military actions. According to The Sofia Globe, the event was dedicated to the memory of over 669 children killed by Russian troops in Ukraine.

This way of commemoration did not involve loud paraphernalia or mass gatherings, but instead was based on a simple but expressive symbol that appeals to basic human feelings – the idea of childhood, defenselessness and loss.

Billboard with numbers: a public appeal to passersby

In addition to placing children’s shoes, the party rented a billboard nearby embassy, which listed statistics on war victims. The poster called Russia a terrorist state and also provided figures on the number of civilians killed and children abducted.

In particular, the billboard stated that over 14,999 civilians had been killed and over 19,546 children had been abducted. In this way, the organizers combined the emotional symbol of the action with specific numerical indicators, which, according to their plan, should outline the scale of the tragedy.

The party’s statement: position and argumentation

The statement distributed by DSB representatives speaks of destroyed houses, broken families and children who know the sound of sirens better than the school bell, as well as the cold and lack of electricity as part of the reality of war. The text emphasizes that Ukrainians have been paying a high price for four years, while other countries continue to live in familiar comfort.

The party representatives expressed their belief that Bulgaria should remain close to Ukraine for as long as necessary, emphasizing that Ukraine’s struggle concerns a wider range of states and values.

Political and social context

The action took place against the backdrop of a protracted war and an international debate on Russia’s responsibility for war crimes and the consequences of aggression against Ukraine. The choice of location — the area near the diplomatic mission — gives the event a clearly defined political content, since the symbolic gesture was directed directly at the state, which the organizers consider responsible for the deaths of children and civilians.

The combination of the visual image of children’s shoes with specific statistical data creates a format of public reminder that simultaneously appeals to emotions and facts. In this sense, the DSB action became part of a broader European practice of memorial events designed to maintain attention to the humanitarian consequences of the war in Ukraine.

Thus, the action near the Russian embassy in Sofia turned into a form of political expression, in which the memory of the dead children is combined with a clearly formulated position on the long war and Bulgaria’s role in supporting Ukraine.
