China launches its own investigation against products from the EU: details

Today, June 17, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced the start of an anti-dumping investigation into imports of pork and pork products from the European Union. This decision was made in response to a complaint by the China Livestock Association, which accused European producers of artificially lowering the prices of their products.

About this informs Reuters.

The investigation will cover a wide range of pork products, including fresh, chilled and frozen meat, as well as offal. China’s Ministry of Commerce must complete the investigation by June 17, 2025, but can extend it for another six months if necessary.

The European Commission said it is not concerned about the investigation and guarantees its compliance with the rules of the World Trade Organization. However, Spain, the largest exporter of pork to China, has called for talks to avoid possible export tariffs.

It is noted that this move by China is taking place against the background of escalating trade tensions between the countries.

Recently, the EU imposed additional tariffs on electric cars from China, and the US increased tariffs on imports of Chinese goods. China, in turn, is considering the possibility of introducing tariffs on imported cars from the EU and the USA.

Starting next month, the European Union will impose additional tariffs of 38.1% on electric cars from China, escalating a global trade war and increasing the cost of selling cars in Europe for companies from China’s BYD Co. to Tesla Inc.

United States President Joe Biden is raising tariffs on imports of Chinese goods, including semiconductors, batteries, solar cells and electric vehicles.
