Donald Trump signed an order imposing an additional 25% tariff on India

US President Donald Trump signed a decree to introduce an additional duty of 25% on India, which directly or indirectly imports oil from Russia. About this it is said in the message of the White House.

The decree provides that the duty applies to goods imported or released from storage for consumption no later than 00:01 EST 21 days after the date of signing the document. The exception is goods that were loaded onto a ship in the port and are in transit – until September 17, 2025.

Trump’s threat to India over the purchase of Russian oil was heard on July 31, when he announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods. On August 4, he announced a “substantial increase” in tariffs for India, without specifying a specific date. Already on August 5, Trump announced that he would introduce additional sanctions within 24 hours.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India explained that the import of oil is carried out in order to ensure stable and affordable energy prices for Indian consumers, which is a “necessity caused by the situation in the world market”.

At the same time, as New Delhi stated, the same countries that criticize India are themselves conducting trade with Russia:

“Unlike in our case, such trade is not even a vital national need.”

Russia remains the largest supplier of oil to India, providing about 35% of total imports. According to Reuters, in January-June this year, India received approximately 1.75 million barrels of Russian oil per day, which is 1% more than in the same period last year.
