Due to the war in Ukraine, the market of energy drinks has grown significantly: statistics of consumption and impact on health

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, Ukrainian society underwent drastic changes. In particular, the war affected many aspects of everyday life of citizens, among which the change in consumer habits occupies a special place. One of these aspects was the significant growth of the energy drink market. These products have become popular not only among the civilian population, but also among military personnel.
Energy drinks: what are they and why are they needed?
Energy drinks are non-alcoholic drinks containing stimulants – caffeine, taurine, guarana, B vitamins and other components that increase physical and mental activity. In the conditions of war, the need for these qualities among Ukrainians increases due to a high level of stress, physical exertion and lack of sleep.
Popular energy drinks in Ukraine
Several brands of energy drinks are popular in Ukraine, including:
- Red Bull – a classic energy drink known all over the world. It is consumed for its high caffeine content and quick action.
- Monster Energy – popular among young people and military personnel due to a wide range of flavors and a strong energy effect.
- Burn – known for its powerful charge of energy and various tastes.
- Hell Energy is a Hungarian brand that has become popular due to its affordable price and high quality.
- Adrenaline Rush – a Russian brand that remains popular despite the political circumstances.

In addition, new brands have appeared, among which is “Volya” – a brand of energy, launched by one of the largest producers of bottled water in the region. The production line of this brand is capable of producing 16,000 cans every hour, and the demand fully covers these volumes.
Consumption of energy drinks among civilians
Among the civilian population of Ukraine, the consumption of energy drinks increased significantly with the beginning of the war. The main consumers are young people, students, IT workers and other industries that require high concentration of attention and endurance. Drinks are used to overcome fatigue during the working day, those who have excessive work.
Consumption of energy drinks among military personnel
Military personnel are one of the main groups of consumers of energy drinks. In the conditions of hostilities and constant physical and mental stress, energy drinks become a necessity. They help maintain high concentration, endurance and reaction speed. Our defenders use energizers during night shifts, long-term operations, and in conditions of sleep deprivation to temporarily improve their morale.
During long marches and combat missions, the military may encounter situations where it is necessary to maintain high physical activity for many hours or even days. Energy drinks help to quickly restore energy balance and reduce the feeling of fatigue, which is critically important in combat conditions.
In combat conditions, it is important to maintain high concentration and quickly react to a change in the situation. The caffeine in energy drinks stimulates the central nervous system, improving attention and reaction. This is especially important for the military, who make operational decisions on the battlefield.
In addition, during hostilities, access to water and other resources may be limited. Energy drinks not only provide energy, but also help quench thirst quickly, which is important in situations where it is not possible to provide regular food and water.
The average military serviceman can consume from 2 to 5 cans of energy drinks per day. In critical situations, when it is necessary to maintain high activity for a long time, the amount of consumed drinks may increase. Military personnel often choose energy drinks with high caffeine content and additional endurance-enhancing ingredients.
Statistical data on the consumption of energy drinks
2022 year
According to market research data, in 2022 the market of energy drinks in Ukraine grew by 30% compared to the previous year. This was caused by an increase in demand among both the civilian population and the military. According to the analytical company Euromonitor International, the volume of sales of energy drinks in Ukraine in 2022 amounted to about 150 million liters.
2023 year
In 2023, the energy drink market continued to grow. During the year, sales increased by another 20%. The main consumers remained young people and military personnel. In particular, the demand for drinks with a high caffeine content and additional vitamins that help restore strength has increased. Sales volume in 2023 reached 180 million liters.
2024 year
In 2024, the energy drink market reached its peak, growing by another 15%. This is due to constant hostilities and a high level of stress among the population. At the same time, the popularity of new brands and products with improved properties grew. According to forecasts, the volume of sales in 2024 may exceed 200 million liters.
One standard can of this drink contains as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. However, to make coffee, you need boiling water, which means electricity or gas, and time. In conditions of blackouts and stress, as well as in field conditions, this is not always possible, while the power supply only needs to be opened. At the front, this is sometimes the only way to quickly quench your thirst and get a boost of energy. The military explains that when you have to walk several kilometers with heavy equipment, energy supplies become the only source of energy, they are sold in large batches in stores in the frontline regions.
Impact on health
Drinking energy drinks in moderation can have positive effects by improving concentration, increasing energy levels and reducing fatigue. They help people stay active and productive even in difficult conditions. However, scientific research suggests that excessive and constant consumption of energy drinks can contribute to the development of depression, anxiety, aggressive behavior and chronic fatigue among American soldiers, as well as heart and liver problems. For example, there is a well-known case when a serviceman died last winter, he was found in the toilet with an energy meter in his hand. However, most military personnel are unaware of the potential negative effects of caffeine and other stimulants contained in these beverages.
High caffeine content can cause arrhythmia, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems. Also, constant use of energy drinks can contribute to the development of anxiety, depression and aggressive behavior, cause psychological and physiological dependence. In addition, the use of energy drinks in large quantities can lead to sleep disturbances, which reduces the body’s ability to recover.
Taking into account the negative consequences of energy drinks, it is necessary to limit the amount of their consumption. The recommended daily dose of caffeine is 400 mg for adults, which is roughly equivalent to 4 cans of standard energy drinks.
So, energy drinks became an integral part of the life of Ukrainians during the war, but it is important to remember the potential health risks and consume them responsibly.
