Elon Musk announced the closure of the USAID program

Elon Musk, who currently heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), said that the liquidation of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is currently underway. About this informs Reuters.

“It is beyond repair,” Musk said, adding that President Trump agrees with the need to close the program. According to him, the closure of USAID is part of an initiative to reduce government spending.

Elon Musk’s statement appeared against the background of stormy events surrounding USAID. A possible merger of the agency with the State Department now looks like an already approved plan.

Earlier, Republican Brian Mast reported that USAID will likely be transferred under the direct leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He stressed that he is working with Rubio to ensure proper oversight of these agencies.

We remind you that USAID is the world’s largest individual donor. In fiscal year 2023, the U.S. committed $72 billion to international aid, covering everything from women’s health in conflict zones to providing access to clean water, HIV/AIDS treatment, energy security, and the fight against corruption. The program provided 42% of all humanitarian aid tracked by the UN in 2024.
