Elon Musk’s statement appeared against the background of stormy events surrounding USAID. A possible merger of the agency with the State Department now looks like an already approved plan.
Earlier, Republican Brian Mast reported that USAID will likely be transferred under the direct leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He stressed that he is working with Rubio to ensure proper oversight of these agencies.

In fiscal year 2023, the U.S. committed $72 billion to international aid, covering everything from women’s health in conflict zones to providing access to clean water, HIV/AIDS treatment, energy security, and the fight against corruption. The program provided 42% of all humanitarian aid tracked by the UN in 2024.
