Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Apple, accusing them of monopoly

Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Apple, accusing them of forming illegal monopolies in the market of artificial intelligence and mobile applications. The lawsuit was filed on August 25, 2025 in California Federal Court, reports The Verge.

Musk believes that the integration of ChatGPT in the iPhone within Apple Intelligence provides OpenAI with an unfair advantage: users are allegedly “forced” the use of ChatGPT, which reduces interest in alternative AI products, including xAI’s Grok chatbot. The document also notes that the App Store artificially limits the visibility of competing apps in selections such as “Must-Have Apps”, where as of August 24, only ChatGPT was featured.

The lawsuit also accuses Apple of using its dominant position in the smartphone market to create a “protective barrier” for OpenAI, because the integration of ChatGPT in the iPhone gives the company access to billions of user queries.

At the same time, Apple rejects Musk’s accusations, stressing that the App Store algorithms are “designed to be fair and impartial”. CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman reacted to Elon Musk’s statements, calling them “amazing”, because, according to him, he heard claims that Musk himself is using X in his own interests and to the detriment of competitors.
