The EU has appointed a special envoy to strengthen the fight against Russia’s “shadow fleet”
The head of the EU foreign policy department, Kaia Kallas, has appointed a special envoy-coordinator to strengthen measures against the Russian “shadow fleet”. This was reported by the official website of the European Union.
Kaia Kallas emphasized that the “shadow fleet” provides financing for Russian aggression and is used as a platform for hybrid attacks. To take “decisive measures,” Kallas appointed a special coordinating envoy.
According to her, on October 20, ministers discussed tougher steps in response, including granting additional powers to inspect “shadow fleet” vessels.
“I have also appointed a special coordinating envoy who will collect best practices from different member states and act more quickly on these issues,” Kallas said.
She noted that a more decisive approach to combating the “shadow fleet” is needed to reduce Russia’s military spending. at the EU level.
Currently, every sixth tanker in the world belongs to Russia’s “shadow fleet” – this is about 17% of the total. Since the beginning of 2025, analysts have counted 940 vessels belonging to this fleet, which is 45% more than last year.
