EU and the world

EU citizens are leaving Musk X’s social network en masse

The number of users of the social network X in Europe has significantly decreased – this is evidenced by a new report of the platform, published in accordance with the requirements of the European Union under the Digital Services Act. X has lost 11 million users in the region since last August. About this informs Political.

The biggest decrease was recorded in France (2.7 million users), Poland (1.8 million) and Germany (1.3 million). Currently, the total number of users in Europe is about 95 million, which is a decrease of 10.5% compared to last year, when this figure reached about 105 million. In a number of countries, the situation is even worse — for example, in Lithuania and Luxembourg, the number of users has decreased by 25%.

After Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022 and renamed it X, he significantly changed the platform’s policies. His open support for right-wing movements in the US and Europe has drawn sharp criticism. Musk is accused of promoting the spread of misinformation and hate speech.

As a result, many famous users stopped using X. Among them are the writer Stephen King, the University of Leeds, The Guardian newspaper, the official account of the city of Paris and others. From 2023, the European Commission will conduct a review of the platform’s compliance with EU rules in the field of combating illegal content and fake news. In July, X was charged with violating the law, but no sanctions have yet been applied.
