Fake Kuleba called a US senator, trying to get important data for the Russian Federation: NYT

Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, Benjamin Cardin, received a phone call from a pseudo-Dmytro Kuleba, a person posing as the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. As informs The New York Times, citing a letter from the Senate Security Service and its own sources, said the incident occurred on September 19.

The senator’s office received an email purportedly from Kuleba requesting a Zoom video conference. During the call, the interlocutor looked and behaved just like the ex-minister, but Cardin became suspicious when the fake diplomat started asking “politically motivated questions” about the upcoming US elections.

The questions about whether the senator supports strikes with long-range missiles on the territory of Russia seemed especially suspicious. Cardin immediately interrupted the conversation and reported the incident to the State Department.

Currently, it is not known who exactly is behind this provocation, but American special services warn that China, Iran, and Russia are actively using artificial intelligence to influence the election processes in the United States. According to intelligence, Russia is the most active in this area.

As the publication notes, despite the fact that there is no direct evidence of Russia’s involvement in this situation, the nature of the questions posed to the senator indicates the Russian Federation’s interest, especially in supporting Western missile strikes on Russian territory.

We will remind that the use of artificial intelligence for political manipulation is no longer news for American elections. So, last year, a campaign ad for Republican candidate Ron DeSantis imitated Donald Trump’s voice. And this year, in January, there was a case when artificial intelligence created a call on behalf of President Joe Biden, who called on voters not to participate in the primaries in the state of New Hampshire.
