First case of COVID-19 strain “Cicada” detected in Ukraine

The first case of the COVID-19 subvariant “Cicada” has been detected in Ukraine, which has already spread to 23 countries. At the same time, it does not have signs that would indicate a higher epidemic risk or the ability to provoke a new large-scale wave of morbidity. This was reported by the Ministry of Health.

The world first became aware of “Cicada” at the end of 2024. In Ukraine, this variant was recorded by specialists from the Center for Public Health during a laboratory study that allows genetically decoding the virus and determining what mutations have occurred in its genome.

The Ministry of Health notes that the symptoms of “Cicada” do not differ from other variants of COVID-19. These include a runny nose, fever, cough, headache, fatigue, loss of smell or taste, and sometimes eye irritation or a rash.

Vaccination, as before, remains the most effective way to protect against severe cases of the virus and its complications.
