EU and the world

For the first time in 16 years, Ukraine completed the 2026 Winter Olympics without a single medal

The Ukrainian national team has concluded its performances at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo without winning medals. The last start for Ukrainian athletes was the men’s mass start in cross-country skiing, where Dmytro Dragun and Oleksandr Lisohor were not considered among the medal contenders. On February 22, Anastasia Nikon was supposed to compete in the women’s mass start, but she withdrew from the start due to illness.

The greatest expectations were traditionally associated with freestyle, because at the two previous Winter Olympics it was in ski acrobatics that Oleksandr Abramenko brought Ukraine gold and silver medals. However, this time the Ukrainian athletes failed to demonstrate a result that would allow them to compete for the podium.

Skeletonist Vladyslav Geraskevych also had a chance at the award, but the International Olympic Committee suspended him from the competition due to the use of the so-called “memory helmet” with photographs of athletes killed by Russia during training runs.

The Ukrainian biathlon team, despite having experienced and competitive athletes, was unable to impose a fight on the leaders in their disciplines.

Thus Thus, for the first time in 16 years, Ukraine finished the Winter Olympics without medals and for the third time in history it was left without awards. The last time a similar result was recorded was at the 2010 Games in Vancouver, and before that – in 2002 in Salt Lake City. In Sochi-2014, Ukrainians won two medals, and in Pyeongchang-2018 and Beijing-2022 – one each.
