Former captain of Ukraine’s national football team suspected of supporting the Russian army

Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office in absentia reported on the suspicion of aiding the aggressor state to the former captain of the Ukrainian football team, who has been living in Russia for a long time and actively supports the military formations of the Russian Federation. He is accused of 1 Art. 111-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The prosecutor’s office does not name the suspect, however information “Interfax-Ukraine” is talking about Anatoly Tymoshchuk.
Since 2017, this former captain of the national football team of Ukraine has held the position of assistant head coach of the St. Petersburg club Zenit. In September of last year, the club took part in a match dedicated to raising funds for Russian military units, in particular, formed from the so-called football hooligans, which take part in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine.
T-shirts with autographs of the participants of that match were put up for auction, and the former Ukrainian player also joined the initiative. His T-shirt was sold for 700 thousand rubles. The collected funds were directed to the support of the “106th reconnaissance battalion” of the Russian Armed Forces, also known as the “106 Moscow reconnaissance detachment”, which later received the name “Svetloyar”.
In January 2023, according to the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, personal economic sanctions were applied against the aforementioned football player. Later, he was stripped of all state awards. The pre-trial investigation in the case is carried out by investigators of the Main Directorate of the SBU in the city of Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The article under which the suspicion is raised provides up to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
