Freezing hostilities and abandoning NATO: Vice President Trump reveals his strategy for ending the war

James D. Vance, Donald Trump’s pick for vice president, believes a potential deal to end the war in Ukraine could include a freeze on fighting on the current front line and Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO. That’s what he’s about stated during the Sean Ryan Show.

Vance noted that “sometimes you have to negotiate with bad people,” and emphasized that both Russia and Ukraine, as well as Europe, seek an end to the war. In his opinion, Trump will “sit down and tell” the parties to the conflict, including the Ukrainians, Russians and Europeans, to “figure out how to achieve a peaceful settlement.”

Vance believes that this settlement will consist of consolidating the current front line as a demarcation line that will be “heavily fortified” to prevent further Russian attacks.

“Ukraine maintains its independent sovereignty, Russia receives guarantees of neutrality from Ukraine — it will not join NATO […]. I think that’s what it will look like in the end,” Vance said, adding that according to this plan, Germany and other countries Europe will be obliged to finance the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Although Trump himself has not publicly detailed his plans for Ukraine, he has repeatedly stated that he will be able to end the war if he is re-elected. At a debate with Joe Biden on June 28, Trump called Putin’s demands for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the occupied territories and refusal to join NATO “unacceptable”.

Reuters writes that Trump’s advisers have presented a plan according to which additional military aid to Ukraine will be provided only if Kyiv agrees to negotiations with Moscow. Trump also said that he plans to end financial aid to Ukraine if he becomes president.
