From January 1, Romania will close more than 30 land checkpoints due to Schengen accession
From January 1, 2025, in connection with Romania’s full accession to the Schengen area, the country will close more than 30 checkpoints on its internal borders with Hungary and Bulgaria. About this informs press service of the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“As a result of the Council’s decision to set the date for the abolition of checks on persons at the internal land borders with and between the Republic of Bulgaria and Romania, approved by the Council of Justice and Internal Affairs on December 12, 2024, internal border controls will be abolished on January 1, 2025. Therefore, people can to move to or from other EU/EEA/CN member states (except Cyprus and Ireland) without passing border control”. – the message says.
However, according to the agreement signed in early December by the interior ministers of Romania, Bulgaria, Austria and Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania will continue to control their land borders for six months after joining the Schengen area.
“Compensatory measures” will be implemented to ensure public safety and combat illegal migration. These include random document checks by the police for persons crossing Romania’s borders by land, water or air.
