From which EU countries do most Ukrainian refugees return?
Currently, more than 4 million Ukrainians have refugee or temporary protection status in EU countries. The influx of those fleeing the war in Ukraine has noticeably decreased. In some countries, the opposite trend is even observed – refugees leave en masse. This is evidenced report data, published by the EU statistical office (Eurostat) this week.
Where are the most Ukrainians?
As of the end of March 2024, the largest number of Ukrainians with the status of temporary protection was in Germany. There are currently over 1.3 million refugees from Ukraine – 30.9% of the total number of our fellow citizens who received protection in the EU. Second place is occupied by Poland. To escape the war, 955,500 Ukrainians remained there (22.7% of the total number in the EU countries). Next in popularity among refugees is the Czech Republic. Currently, there are 364,400 Ukrainians with the status of temporary protection (8.7%).
Compared to the end of February 2024, the largest absolute increase in the number of Ukrainian refugees was observed in Germany. During the month, 15,200 of our fellow citizens came there. Thus, the number of Ukrainians with protection status in Germany increased by +1.2%. More.
The number of refugees in the Netherlands (+4.7 thousand, or +4.0%) and Bulgaria (+3.48 thousand, or +7.6%) also increased significantly.
Where do refugees leave from?
On the other hand, during March, more Ukrainian refugees left 9 EU countries than entered them. In particular, the number of our fellow citizens in the Czech Republic decreased by 20.7 thousand (-5.4%). The number of Ukrainians with protection status in Sweden decreased by almost 10,000 people (-21.5%). In addition, the number of refugees in Austria (-9.1 thousand, or -11.1%), Denmark (-5.4 thousand, or -14.5%) and Poland (-1.7 thousand , or -0.2%).
There are almost 10 Ukrainian refugees per 1,000 Europeans
Compared to the population of each EU country, the highest indicators of the total number of beneficiaries of temporary protection per thousand persons at the end of March 2024 were observed in the Czech Republic (33.7 persons). That is, currently Ukrainian refugees make up almost 3.4% of the inhabitants of the Czech Republic. The number of Ukrainians per 1,000 local residents is high in Lithuania (26.7) and Poland (26). The average figure for the EU is 9.4 of our fellow citizens per thousand people, that is, almost 1% of the population of European countries.
