Georgian Foreign Ministry accuses Ukraine of “obstacles” on country’s path to EU

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili stated that Ukraine was allegedly “included” in campaigns aimed at preventing Georgia’s accession to the European Union. This was reported by the SOVA publication.

“Georgia’s path to integration into the European Union and the process of obtaining candidate status were somehow accompanied by a negative attitude from Ukraine – so that Georgia would not obtain candidate status. We saw with our own eyes what campaigns were conducted in 2022-2023 – before we acquired candidate status, and here Ukraine’s involvement in this direction was repeatedly revealed, that they opposed Georgia’s European integration in various forms. This happened, it was not hidden, we all know it”, – said Maka Bochorishvili.

The Georgian Foreign Minister also noted that, despite the “campaign to obstruct” regarding the country’s membership in the EU, Ukraine cannot influence the position of the European Union, since it is not a member of it.

Bochorishvili emphasized that Georgia’s policy towards Russia is consistent with the approaches of the EU and NATO countries:

“No one wants to enter into a confrontation with Russia and create additional security challenges. This is quite natural. The primary duty of the government is to avoid threats to the country. This is our duty, and if we do it, it should not be condemned – it should be welcomed.

As a reminder, on November 4, the European Commission published a report on Georgia’s progress towards EU membership. The document sharply criticized the country for restricting freedom of expression, the right to peaceful assembly, and violating the principles of non-discrimination.

“Following the European Council conclusions of December 2024 and in view of Georgia’s continued withdrawal, the Commission considers Georgia to be a candidate country in name only. The Georgian authorities must demonstrate a strong commitment to changing course and returning to the path of EU accession”, the European Commission’s report on Georgia concludes.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry called the European Commission’s assessment “political speculation” and stated that the country allegedly remains committed to its commitments to the European Union.
