Google Translate gets Gemini support for more accurate translations

Google is rolling out an update to its Translate app that adds a new feature that uses the Gemini AI model for more accurate translations. The new option appears as a toggle that lets users choose between two modes — Fast or Advanced. 9to5Google reports,

Fast mode is focused on speed, while Advanced “specializes in accuracy thanks to Gemini”. The feature is currently only available to a select few iOS users and supports translations between English, French, and Spanish.

The design of the updated interface follows the style of the Gemini app, although Google recently moved it to the request window. It is not yet known whether this feature will be free or part of a paid package, as there is no indication in the user interface that it will be paid. Presumably, it may be related to the Google AI Pro service, like other model selection tools.

Experts tested the new model on an excerpt from Molière’s play “The Misanthrope”. In standard mode, the translation turned out to be literal, but inaccurate, while Gemini mode offered a stylistically correct version that was closer to the content of the original.

Although Advanced mode works slower, it provides a more contextually accurate translation. For more complex texts, Google recommends using the Gemini application directly, as it is able to explain the meaning of individual phrases. At the same time, the company warns that artificial intelligence can still make mistakes or create incorrect interpretations.
