Hungary and Slovakia oppose EU plan to abandon Russian gas

On June 16, Hungary and Slovakia opposed the European Commission’s plan to stop gas purchases from Russia during a meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg. About this stated Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Hungary Peter Sijarto.

He called the proposed strategy the “von der Leyen-Zelensky plan” and emphasized that it poses a threat to Hungary’s energy security and may lead to the termination of electricity exports to Ukraine.

“Hungary, therefore, plays a key role in the energy supply of Ukraine. But if an uncertain energy supply situation is created in Hungary, if Hungary’s energy supply is in danger, then this can have a serious impact on whether we can continue to supply Ukraine.” – emphasized Peter Sijarto.

He also accused the European Commission of having “submitted” to Ukraine and is ready to allow Hungarian families’ utility costs to rise several times in order to support this plan.

“I can tell you that Brussels has bowed to Kyiv and they are showing full commitment to the von der Leyen-Zelensky plan, and they are showing commitment to cutting off cheap sources of natural gas and oil from Europe, thereby driving utility costs sky high, especially in Central Europe, especially in Hungary.” – concluded Sijarto.
