IAEA confirms damage to research nuclear reactor in Iran
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed, that as a result of the latest Israeli airstrikes on the territory of Iran, the heavy water research reactor located in Khondab was damaged.
Currently, the facility is under construction, has not been put into operation and does not contain nuclear materials, therefore, there is no threat of radiation contamination.
“The IAEA has information that the heavy water research reactor in Khondab (formerly Arak) that was under construction was damaged. It was not operating and did not contain nuclear material, so there were no radiological consequences.”, the message says.
On the night of June 19, the Israeli Air Force deployed 40 fighter jets in a large-scale air strike against targets on Iranian territory. One of the key targets was the Arak nuclear reactor, where planes reportedly destroyed a critical protective structure needed to produce plutonium, a potential nuclear weapons material.
In addition, the facility in Natang, which Israel suspects of involvement in the development of nuclear weapons, was also attacked. According to the IDF, this facility stored specialized equipment and components capable of accelerating Tehran’s nuclear program. Earlier, the strike on the Isfahan nuclear facility damaged at least four critical infrastructure facilities, including a uranium processing plant and a facility that produces fuel plates.
