In China, a humanoid robot ‘attacked’ its developers (video)

In China, during the public display of the H1 humanoid robot from the Unitree company, an incident occurred that reminded us of a scene from a fantasy film — the robot suddenly “lashed out” at its developers. About this informs T4.

The robot began to move chaotically and aggressively, which caused surprise to those present and associations with the idea of artificial intelligence that goes out of control. In fact, the event has a completely scientific explanation and has nothing to do with the “machine uprising”. During the demonstration, the H1 was attached to a safety cable, a typical safety measure when testing robots in public. However, it was this cable that caused the stabilization system to malfunction.

The algorithms included in H1 provide for the maintenance of balance during free movement. When the tension of the cable restricted the robot’s movements, the system perceived this as a loss of balance and began to compensate for the changes more intensively. As a result, there were uncontrolled oscillations, which from the outside looked like an attempt to escape or get out of control.

This case illustrates how sensitive stabilization algorithms are in modern robots, and how external factors can trigger unexpected behavior. Despite the drama of the moment, the situation remained controlled — the robot had no autonomy and acted exclusively within the framework of programmed reactions.

The incident was another reminder of the need to create appropriate conditions for testing new technologies to avoid false impressions. Such cases do not indicate a threat from robotics, but emphasize the complexity of its configuration and testing.
