In Kyiv, a fraudster pretending to be an SBU employee swindled a pensioner out of over UAH 1.4 million

A 74-year-old resident of Kyiv contacted the Darnytsia Police Department and reported that an unknown man had swindled her of all her savings.

According to law enforcement, a stranger called the woman’s mobile phone and introduced himself as an SBU officer. He convinced the pensioner that her number was supposedly “displayed” in the Russian Federation, and therefore the money she kept at home needed to be “checked” for possible involvement in illegal activities.

Believing the words of the interlocutor, the Kyiv resident agreed to his conditions and handed over all her funds to the man: over 21 thousand dollars, almost 5 thousand euros and about 285 thousand hryvnias. This amounted to over 1.4 million UAH.

The operatives, together with the analysts of the criminal analysis sector, identified and searched for the so-called “courier”. He turned out to be a 31-year-old local resident who has no connection to law enforcement agencies.

The investigators informed the man of the suspicion. The sanction of the incriminating article provides for up to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. Currently, a pre-trial investigation is underway, and the police are identifying other participants in the fraudulent scheme.
