Turkey has blocked access to the social network Instagram, and has not yet announced the reasons and duration of the ban. By data Reuters, this was announced by the information technology regulator on August 2.

Access to the Instagram mobile application has also become unavailable, but the reasons and duration of the ban are not specified.

According to the publication, this step was taken after the statement of the head of the Directorate for Communications of the Administration of the President of Turkey, Fahrettin Altun, on Wednesday, July 31. Altun criticized the platform for its decision to block posts expressing condolences over the killing of the leader of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh.

“This is censorship, pure and simple”, Altun said, adding that Instagram did not cite a policy violation in its actions.

The company Meta has not yet commented on the situation.

The murder of Ismail Khania

The leader of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas Ismail Haniya and one of his bodyguards were killed as a result of shelling of his residence in Tehran. Initially, it was reported that a rocket hit the residence. The media later found out that Haniya had been killed in a guest house by a bomb, not a missile strike.

Iran has threatened a “severe response” to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya. In response, US President Joe Biden confirmed Washington’s readiness to support Israel’s defense against terrorist Islamic movements in the Middle East.
