Instagram is testing a new “Community Chat” feature
Meta is testing a new “Community Chat” feature for Instagram that will allow groups of up to 250 members to be created. About this informs Engadget.
The new feature will work similarly to channels in Discord, allowing users to create and manage chats on specific topics. Unlike broadcast channels on Instagram, where only the author can publish messages for his followers, all participants can write in community chats.
In addition, moderation tools are provided – administrators will be able to delete messages and block users to ensure the safety of the channel. It is not yet known when exactly the feature will be available or if it will be launched at all. A representative of Instagram clarified that this is currently only an internal prototype that is being tested within the company.
We will remind you that Meta has already implemented similar capabilities in its other applications. In 2022, WhatsApp began testing the “Communities” feature, and later that year Facebook and Messenger launched “Community Chats”. At the time, Mark Zuckerberg said that this feature should help people find “a new way to connect with people who share common interests.”
