Klitschko urged Kyiv residents to temporarily leave due to large-scale problems with heating and lighting

On January 9, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko called on residents of the capital to temporarily leave the city if possible due to serious problems with heat supply after a massive Russian attack. As a result of strikes on critical infrastructure, almost half of Kyiv’s apartment buildings – about 6,000 – were left without heating.

According to the mayor, the situation is difficult, as key facilities of the energy system were damaged, which made it impossible to provide stable heat and water to residential buildings. In this regard, he advised Kyiv residents who have the opportunity to go outside the city limits, where alternative sources of electricity and heating are available.

“We are doing everything to do this as soon as possible. But the combined attack on Kyiv last night was the most painful for the capital’s critical infrastructure facilities,” Klitschko noted.

The head of the city reported that currently critical facilities — in particular hospitals and maternity hospitals — are provided with heat using mobile boiler houses. City services are operating in emergency mode, while forecasters warn of worsening weather conditions in the coming days, which could complicate restoration work.

The Russian attack began on the evening of January 8 and continued through the night with the use of drones and ballistic missiles. Explosions were heard in several regions of the country, including Lviv and the Kyiv region. Damage was recorded in the suburbs of the capital, there are victims, including a child. Hundreds of thousands of consumers were left without electricity due to the strikes and difficult weather conditions. In Kyiv itself, the shelling caused the destruction of residential buildings, there are deaths and injuries.
