Road accident in Hungary involving Ukrainian children: how the road to the festival turned into a hospital

During a full-scale war, children from Ukraine can get into dangerous situations not only at home or near the front line. Traveling abroad, participating in cultural events, moving between countries or regions can also be accompanied by risks, even if it happens territorially in peaceful conditions. In a volatile environment, any movement requires increased attention to security issues, especially when dealing with minors. Another confirmation of this is the accident in Hungary, which occurred at dawn on July 6.

The morning silence of the Hungarian highway No. 442 was broken by the sound of a crash and the sound of metal grinding against the roadside. According to preliminary data, around five in the morning, a bus with Ukrainian children on its way to an international festival ran off the road and overturned. The accident happened between the cities of Kunsentmarton and Tysafeldvar, in the central part of the country. According to the initial version, the driver failed to control — the weather conditions and the morning time could affect his concentration, but the official reasons are still being established.

There were 77 people in the cabin at that time. They were members of a children’s dance ensemble from Lviv, who were on their way to the festival in the city of Ohrid in North Macedonia, as well as adult chaperones and two drivers. All are citizens of Ukraine. The trip, which was supposed to be part of a cultural exchange, turned into an emergency situation with hospitalization and the intervention of diplomatic services.

For information Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, 21 people were injured as a result of the accident. Four of them were seriously injured. These are two adults (born in 1954 and 1958) and two children — born in 2007 and 2011. Four more children have moderate injuries. They will be discharged under the responsibility of the attendants, when the state of health allows.

Other victims who received minor injuries were taken to a temporary accommodation facility. The main part of the group is currently in Kunsentmarton. The injured were taken to hospitals in three cities: Solnok, Kecskemet and Sentesh, all of them are under medical supervision.

In Kunsentmarton itself, the children and companions were temporarily accommodated in the local House of Culture. With the participation of the city authorities, breakfast was organized for them and basic living conditions were created. According to the carrier, the issue of providing additional buses for the further route or return is being resolved.

Representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary, including the consul and the ambassador, are working at the scene of the accident. They coordinate work with local structures, provide assistance to victims, maintain contact with relatives. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the situation is under control, and diplomatic services continue monitoring until all necessary actions are completed.

The details of the accident on the Hungarian highway are still being clarified, but the overall picture shows how fragile any journey can be in wartime. The children were on their way to an art event, which was supposed to be an event for them, unrelated to the reality of air raid alarms and evacuation bags. Instead of a stage and performances, there are hospitals, injuries and the need to solve logistics in a foreign country.

This case became another confirmation that even during peaceful trips outside Ukraine, children can be exposed to situations that require a quick reaction, coordination and the presence of clear protection mechanisms. Safety of minors during transportation, clear planning of routes, preparation for force majeure — all this should not be a formality.
