The environmental disaster caused by the accident of two Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait, became causing the death of at least 32 dolphins. The total number of dead animals found reached 61.

According to experts, 32 animals died as a result of the fuel oil spill, while others, judging by the condition of the bodies, died before the incident. The bottlenose dolphin species, which is one of the most vulnerable cetaceans in the region, has suffered the most.

Although no cases of live dolphins being washed ashore have yet been recorded, experts predict an increase in the number of injured marine animals in the coming months. Environmentalists continue to monitor and assess the consequences of the disaster for the marine ecosystem.

We will remind that the incident happened on December 15 in the Kerch Strait during a storm. As a result of the accident of the tankers “Volgoneft-212” and “Volgoneft-239”, a significant amount of fuel oil got into the sea, which is still spreading in the waters of the Black Sea. Oil products polluted more than 50 km of the coast, in particular the southern coast of Crimea, the water area of the Kerch Strait, the Black Sea and the coast of the Russian Federation in the Anapa region.
