More than 50 people have died from an unknown disease in Congo

An unknown disease has killed more than 50 people in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo. About this informs AR.

Medical Director of Bikoro Hospital and Regional Monitoring Center Serge Ngalebato said that in most cases only 48 hours passed from the first symptoms to death. The outbreak of the disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo began on January 21, and so far 419 cases of infection have been recorded, of which 53 have been fatal.

According to the African Bureau of the WHO, the first cases in the city of Boloko were related to the consumption of a bat – three children who ate it died within two days of the appearance of symptoms of hemorrhagic fever. After the outbreak, samples from 13 patients were sent to the National Institute of Biomedical Research in Kinshasa for analysis.

The number of such outbreaks in Africa has increased by more than 60% over the past decade. Experts have long been concerned about the transmission of infectious diseases from wild animals to humans who eat them.
