NBU explained when 100 and 200 hryvnia banknotes were last printed
The National Bank of Ukraine announced that it has not issued new 100-hryvnia banknotes since the beginning of 2024, and has not been printing 200-hryvnia banknotes since the beginning of 2023.
Issuance of 100-hryvnia banknotes fell sharply after the start of a full-scale war. If in 2021 they were printed about 240 million pieces, then in 2022-2023 – only 25 million each. From the beginning of 2024 until August 25, 2025, new banknotes of this denomination were not produced. Banknotes with a denomination of 200 hryvnias were last printed in 2022 – then 370 million pieces were issued, in 2021 – 110 million, and from the beginning of 2023, the printing of this denomination was completely stopped.
The NBU emphasizes that the absence of new printing does not mean the rejection of these denominations. If necessary, the regulator can introduce banknotes into circulation from previously created reserves. In addition, the National Bank previously announced its intention to issue new 100 and 200 hryvnia banknotes with the inscription “Glory to Ukraine!”.
A similar situation existed in 2023 with the hryvnia 50 banknote – then it was not printed, although 80 million pieces were issued in 2022, and 60 million in 2024. In 2025, this denomination was returned to print again – 80 million pieces have already been printed.
This year, the National Bank issued the most banknotes of higher denominations: 200 million pieces of 500 hryvnias and 172.8 million pieces of 1,000 hryvnias (as of August 25). In addition, in 2025, the National Bank produced 60 million 5-hryvnia coins, 56.98 million 10-hryvnia coins, and 10 million 50-kopeck coins.
As for the possible expansion or contraction of the nominal series, the NBU has not made any new decisions yet. It was explained there that an annual assessment of the compliance of the monetary series with the socio-economic needs of the country is carried out, and it is based on the results of this assessment that decisions on changes are made. In case of such decisions, banks and the public were promised to be informed about them.
“The main task of the National Bank when determining the optimal structure of banknotes and coins is the maximum convenience of the nominal series to ensure cash payments. An insufficient number of denominations in circulation can create complications during calculations, and an excessive number of denominations – inconvenience for operators of the cash market and probable additional costs for ensuring cash circulation, added the NBU.
