Northern lights appeared over Ukraine: details
Yesterday evening, May 10, residents of Kharkiv and many other cities of Ukraine witnessed an unforgettable sight – the aurora borealis. This phenomenon, which can normally only be observed in the arctic and antarctic regions, became available for observation due to a powerful geomagnetic storm.
“This natural phenomenon is the result of a coronal mass ejection that occurred on the Sun between May 8 and 9. The particles of the solar wind interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and the upper atmosphere and we see it in the sky“, he explained an astronomer Volodymyr Kazhanov from Kharkiv.
In Kharkiv, the aurora borealis was visible to the naked eye as a dim glow on the northern horizon. Some people have been able to photograph this phenomenon using a long exposure.
The unforgettable flash in the sky, although a rare phenomenon for Ukraine, has happened for the second time since the beginning of May – it was noticed on May 2, and before that in the fall of 2023.
