Orban will meet with Zelenskyi in Kyiv: what will be discussed

On July 1, Hungary began its presidency of the European Union. The head of the country’s government Viktor Orban plans to visit Kyiv on July 2. This is the first visit of the Prime Minister of Hungary to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war.

The newspaper reports on the unexpected visit of the Hungarian leader Guardian, referring to several own sources.

One of the sources of the publication in Budapest reported that the plans for the trip were formed after long negotiations regarding the rights of the Hungarian-speaking minority of Ukraine.

“The premise of the meeting was that the issue of rights had already been resolved. An agreement had been reached between the countries in recent weeks. They will be able to declare it a success during the visit of Obran.” – writes the Guardian.

Orbán’s critics accuse him of using the issue as a smokescreen to promote Russia’s position on the conflict.

Unlike most European countries, Hungary has repeatedly questioned the need for military support to Ukraine, and instead called for a ceasefire. After winning the parliamentary elections in 2022, Orban included Zelenskyi in the list of “opponents” who allegedly conspired against him and supported the opposition.
