The Ministry of Health has provided recommendations on how to protect yourself from acute intestinal infections in the summer

In the first four months of 2025, almost 16,000 cases of acute intestinal infections were registered in Ukraine, including both individual and group cases. Ministry of Health provided recommendations on how to protect yourself from acute intestinal infections in the summer.

In the warm season, acute intestinal infections (AGI) occur especially often — they are one of the most common infectious diseases that can cause serious complications, especially in children. Infection most often occurs through the use of poor-quality products or water, swimming in contaminated water bodies and non-observance of hygiene standards – for example, through dirty hands or dishes.

GKI pathogens are often found in raw meat, eggs, unpasteurized milk, seafood, and unwashed vegetables and fruits. Ready-made meals, dairy products, eggs and confectionery can be especially dangerous – they often serve as a source of infection.

To prevent infection, you should always wash your hands with soap, especially after going for a walk, using the toilet, and before preparing food. It is necessary to thoroughly wash vegetables and fruits under running water, not to consume expired or improperly stored products, and meat, fish, eggs and other products of animal origin should be well thermally processed.

You should also take care of the cleanliness of kitchen utensils and even avoid swimming in untested water bodies. And most importantly, at the first signs (dry mouth and throat, high temperature with diarrhea or vomiting, spasm-like abdominal pain, little or no urination), you should immediately consult a doctor.

According to the Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, since the beginning of the year, 25 outbreaks of intestinal infections, mostly acute (12 cases), as well as 8 cases of rotavirus enteritis, 4 cases of salmonellosis and one outbreak of food poisoning have been registered in Ukraine. In total, 243 people fell ill in these outbreaks, of which 195 were children.
