Pablo Picasso painting worth 600,000 euros disappears on way to exhibition in Spain

In Spain, Pablo Picasso’s painting “Naturaleza muerta con guitarra” (“Still Life with Guitar”) disappeared while being transported to an exhibition. Its value is estimated at 600 thousand euros (about 29 million hryvnias). This is reported by The Guardian.

The work was created in 1919 in gouache and pencil, its size is 12.7 × 9.8 cm. The canvas currently belongs to a private collector from Madrid. The painting was to be exhibited at the exhibition “Still Life: The Eternity of Immovable”, which opened last week at the CajaGranada Foundation. For this purpose, the work was sent by car from Madrid to Granada.

The van with the cargo arrived at its destination, the paintings were carefully packed, but due to incorrect numbering, some of the works could not be checked immediately. Only a few days later, during unpacking, the curators discovered the absence of Picasso’s work. The Foundation immediately contacted the Spanish National Police. The investigation is ongoing, and the public only became aware of the incident on October 17.

As a reminder, Picasso’s paintings have repeatedly become objects of theft. Over the past decades, dozens of his works have been stolen in France, the United Kingdom and other countries. The theft in 2007 had the greatest resonance, when paintings worth 50 million euros were taken from the house of the artist’s granddaughter in Paris.
