Poland begins its presidency of the Council of the European Union
From January 1, 2025, Poland officially assumes the role of the presiding country in the Council of the European Union. About this reported on the official website of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
This is the second time in the last 13 years that Poland heads the Council of the EU. The presidency, transferred to it from Hungary on the principle of rotation, will last until July 1. It is especially emphasized that this period coincides with the beginning of the new institutional cycle of the European Union.
This creates favorable conditions for setting long-term goals, developing strategies and launching processes that will influence the future of Europe over the next five years. Poland describes its six-month mission as “a period of intensive work for a safe and prosperous future of Europe.”
In the program of the presidency, Poland identified priorities, among which support for Ukraine occupies one of the key places. In particular, it is about the continuation of military aid, the strengthening of sanctions against Russia and Belarus, as well as the use of frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank for the needs of Ukraine.
“Russia’s ongoing armed aggression against Ukraine threatens the security of the entire continent, but it is also a war against the principles and values that the European Union represents. The Polish Presidency will make efforts to respect and promote them in the EU, emphasizing the special role of civil society.” – stated in the application.
