Putin “directly rejects” Trump’s peace proposal on Ukraine: ISW

Vladimir Putin directly rejected the peace proposal proposed by the team of the US President-elect Donald Trump in early November 2024. About this it is said in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

“Russian leader Vladimir Putin has flatly rejected a proposal reportedly being considered by US President-elect Donald Trump’s team in early November 2024. The proposal would have delayed Ukraine’s NATO membership for at least a decade as a condition for ending the war in Ukraine,” – say analysts.

Putin stated that it does not matter for Russia when exactly Ukraine becomes a member of NATO — “today, tomorrow or in 10 years”. According to ISW, this statement is another confirmation of the position of Putin, who refuses any compromises and continues to insist on the demands put forward in 2021-2022. Among them are the neutral status of Ukraine, which excludes its membership in NATO, a significant reduction of the Ukrainian armed forces and a change in the Ukrainian government.

Prior to that, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov repeated Putin’s propaganda theses, saying that the Ukrainian government is allegedly illegitimate and cannot be a partner for negotiations. Lavrov emphasized the need to hold presidential elections in Ukraine.
