Return of Ukrainian children from Russia: with the participation of Melania Trump, the fourth time it was possible to take out little Ukrainians

The abduction, forced removal, and separation of Ukrainian children from their families remains one of the most difficult humanitarian issues of the war, as it involves broken family ties, months of searching, and complex negotiations that determine whether a child will be able to see their loved ones again. Each confirmed case of a child’s return carries a special weight, because for a particular family it means the completion of a long and exhausting journey that involves international contacts, data verification, support from humanitarian agencies, and constant coordination between several parties.

As reported in the White House statement, with the assistance of US First Lady Melania Trump, six more Ukrainian children were successfully returned from the territory of the Russian Federation. This is the fourth time that she has helped reunify Ukrainian children. The process was coordinated by international humanitarian organizations, along with the Office of the First Lady, which was involved in organizing this phase.

In a public statement, Melania Trump stressed the importance of family reunification and called it one of the most pressing issues in the world. Her words, “reunifying children with their loved ones in this region of the world remains one of the most important global issues of our time,” referred to the need to maintain cooperation between the parties, for whom the safety and well-being of children in this region of the world must take precedence over military circumstances.

“Reunifying children with their loved ones in this region of the world remains one of the most important global issues of our time. I encourage both parties to remain committed to continued cooperation, putting the safety and well-being of children above this terrible war,” the White House quoted the First Lady as saying.

The latest return involved a group of five minors aged 4 to 15. Another child is reportedly due to be returned to their families in the near future, bringing the total number of children in this case to six. For families who have been waiting for months to hear from their loved ones, each such step marks the end of a gruelling journey of checks, negotiations and mediation.

According to Ukrainian authorities, more than 20,000 Ukrainian children have ended up in Russia and temporarily occupied regions. Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukrainian-controlled territory, 1,985 children have been returned, a figure that gives an idea of the complexity of each individual case, in which the outcome depends on long-term inter-institutional contacts and constant monitoring.
