The Ministry of Education and Science has updated the rules for school olympiads
The quality of education has always been a key factor in the development of society, but in the conditions of war its role becomes even more important. Ukrainian children study in difficult conditions, which include constant stress, the need to adapt to new realities, evacuation and even training in shelters. It is important not only to maintain access to knowledge, but also to create conditions for motivating students, evaluating them and supporting talented young people.
One of the main mechanisms for developing the abilities of schoolchildren are school Olympiads, which help identify gifted children and direct their potential in the right direction. However, the system of conducting the Olympiads had significant shortcomings that limited access to participation, created unequal conditions for children in different regions, and did not take into account the realities of wartime. In this context, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine decided to update the rules of the Olympiads, which will make them more accessible, transparent and fair.
What are the new rules for conducting school Olympiads
The Ministry of Education and Science presented the updated Regulation on the conduct of school Olympiads, which will enter into force on June 1, 2025. About this reported Deputy Minister of Education and Science Yevhen Kudryavets at the presentation of the new Regulations on the Olympic and Tournament Movement. The main reasons for the changes were uneven conditions for participants in different areas, difficult access to the final stages, limited access for children with special educational needs and students who are abroad, as well as a lack of systemic coordination.
One of the main innovations was the cancellation of the school stage of the Olympiad. Previously, this stage was held in every school, but it was often a formality, and its results did not always reflect the real level of knowledge of students. Now the Olympiads will start at the local level, and participation in them will be voluntary. A self-registration system is being implemented, which will allow students to apply independently without the influence of teachers or school administration.
A separate overseas district will be created for Ukrainian schoolchildren who are outside the country. They will be able to join other participants in the second stage. An important change will be the unification of tasks at the regional level – all students will receive the same tests, which will prevent information leakage and make competitions more fair. Personal responsibility for premature distribution of tasks has also been introduced. Children studying in scientific lyceums will have the opportunity to start immediately from the second stage, and students of the Ukrainian Physics and Mathematics Lyceum of KNU named after Taras Shevchenko – from the third, but only in three Olympiads, where they were traditionally among the prize-winners during the last ten years.
The updated system provides for the creation of a rating of the participants, which will increase their chances of getting to the next stage. If the student did not make it to the regional team, he can go further based on the rating indicators of the second stage. This will allow taking into account the individual achievements of schoolchildren and give a chance to more talented students.
In addition, the traditional Internet Olympiads will be replaced by the STEM Olympiad, which will cover science, mathematics, technology and information science. This Olympiad will be held in two stages – intramural and extramural. Students of grades 9–11, as well as students of vocational and technical educational institutions, will be able to take part in it. The part-time stage can last up to three months, depending on the jury’s decision, and the tasks will be creative and aimed at solving real problems.
Expected effect
The proposed changes are aimed at making the system of conducting the Olympics more accessible, transparent and efficient. The Ministry of Education and Science notes that this is only the first stage of the reform, and in the future the format of the Olympiads can be further improved based on the received feedback and analysis of the results.
Despite the difficult conditions of wartime, education remains a strategic priority for Ukraine. A fair system of knowledge evaluation, support of talented youth and equal access to educational opportunities are the key to the future of the state. Investments in the development of gifted children will help prepare a new generation of specialists who will contribute to the reconstruction of the country and its further development.
