Romanian Language Day introduced in Ukraine
A new holiday has been introduced in Ukraine – Romanian Language Day, which will be celebrated annually on August 31. The corresponding decree was signed by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on March 12.
The decision was made to develop mutual understanding, mutual respect and cooperation in Ukrainian-Romanian relations, as well as to “encourage intercultural dialogue”. Romania also has a day dedicated to the Ukrainian language, which is celebrated on November 9. Romanian is the official language of Romania and Moldova and is one of the official languages of the European Union.
Currently, Ukraine does not have a separate holiday dedicated to the languages of other neighboring countries. At the same time, May 24 is celebrated as the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture, which was introduced in 2004 by then-President Leonid Kuchma.
On September 10, 2025, events were held in Ukraine for the first time on the Day of the Crimean Tatar Language and Literature at the initiative of the Mejlis. Its head, Refat Chubarov, noted that the strategy for the development of the Crimean Tatar language, approved by the government, provides for the introduction of a corresponding state holiday.
However, at that time, the Cabinet of Ministers did not consider the Mejlis’ proposal to designate September 10 as the Day of the Crimean Tatar Language and Literature, and did not submit a draft decree to the president on the introduction of such a holiday, which, according to Chubarov, “violated all established deadlines.”
During a panel discussion on September 10, 2025, the First Deputy Head of the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience, Viktor Voynalovych, expressed hope that the presidential decree on the Day of the Crimean Tatar Language could appear in 2026.
