Rubio announced the closure of the Center for Combating Foreign Information Interference

The unit of the US State Department, which was engaged in combating foreign information interference, is ceasing its activities. About this reported US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“I am announcing the closure of the Center for Combating Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (R/FIMI), formerly known as the Global Engagement Center (GEC)”, — said Rubio.
According to the Secretary of State, during the presidency of Joe Biden, this center spent millions of dollars on “actively silencing and censoring the voices of Americans.” The structure cost taxpayers more than $50 million annually to maintain.
Rubio emphasized that US public servants must constantly take care to protect and preserve the freedom of speech for the citizens of the country.
Previously, the unit was criticized by representatives of the Donald Trump administration, including Elon Musk. In their opinion, despite its stated international mission, the center actually censored American conservatives. Formed in late 2024 as a reorganized GEC, the R/FIMI unit aimed to counter disinformation campaigns by foreign governments, including Russia, Iran and China.
