Russia is going to block the resolution on the Strait of Hormuz in the UN Security Council

Russia has opposed an initiative to support the UN Security Council’s resumption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz by force. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has made it clear that the Russian side may use its veto power over this resolution. This is reported by Bloomberg.

The draft UN Security Council resolution, proposed by Bahrain with the support of other Gulf states and Jordan, provides for a number of “defensive measures” to guarantee transit passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The document is intended to provide diplomatic support to the Gulf states if they decide to join military operations or create a naval task force to help free the strait from Iranian control.

According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, such a step is unlikely to contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the region.

“Whether this resolution was planned or will be used – it was certainly planned with the most noble intentions” – to disrupt the nascent and still very fragile chances for negotiations. Or it will be used to legitimize aggression against Iran retrospectively,” Lavrov said at a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badrom Abdelati in Moscow.

In addition, Lavrov said that the text of this resolution does not mention that “Iran is a victim of aggression.” According to him, the adoption of the document will cause a hostile reaction from the Tehran authorities.
