Stepfather who beat 10-year-old stepdaughter to death gets life sentence
The Supreme Court has finally upheld the verdict against a stepfather who intentionally killed a 10-year-old girl with particular cruelty: the man was sentenced to life imprisonment and denied a review of the decision. This was reported by the Procurator General’s Office
The defense insisted on the incorrect application of the law and the reclassification of the crime as intentional grievous bodily harm, but the Supreme Court agreed with the decisions of the previous instances.
In October 2021, in Palad-Kamrivka in Transcarpathia, a 10-year-old girl witnessed a quarrel between her mother and stepfather and tried to avoid the conflict by leaving the house. The drunk and angry stepfather caught up with her and inflicted more than 75 blows with his hands, feet and a wooden table leg. The girl’s 5-year-old sister was also injured during the beating.
After the attack, the children were not provided with any help – their stepfather and mother left them alone until morning. The younger sister said that she found Maya dead.
The head of the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Myroslav Patskan, noted that the sentence is also “a sentence of indifference that takes life.”
The man was detained immediately after the tragedy, and he was in custody without bail the entire time. He was ultimately found guilty of the intentional murder of a minor with special cruelty.
In December 2025, the girl’s mother was found guilty of leaving the child in danger, which led to her death, and was sentenced to 5 years in prison with a probationary period of 2 years and 8 months, mandatory probation, and other obligations. Maya’s younger sister is currently living with her biological father and is undergoing psychological rehabilitation.
