Strikes by German weapons against Russia do not threaten escalation: Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that giving Ukraine the opportunity to use German weapons to strike targets in Russia will not lead to an escalation of the conflict.

We are sure that this will not contribute to escalation, because – as the American president [Joe Biden] also said – it is only about the ability to protect a large city such as Kharkiv, for example. And I think everyone understands that it should be possible. This has always been possible under international law in any case“, said the chancellor of Germany.

In a joint statement with allies, he emphasized that this decision is considered and aimed at ensuring the security of Ukraine, in particular the protection of its cities, including Kharkiv.

Scholz also stated that he would not succumb to pressure from any parties trying to influence his decision in this matter.

The German chancellor noted that the decision to grant Kyiv the right to use German weapons to strike targets on the territory of the Russian Federation was carefully thought out in cooperation with allies.

At the same time, the politician emphasized that he would never allow pressure on him to convince him to make “wrong and untimely decisions”.
