Sugar exports from Ukraine will decrease by almost 20%: UCAB

In the 2025-2026 marketing year, Ukraine will be able to export 505 thousand tons of sugar, which is 19.7% less than in the previous marketing year. This was reported by analysts of the Ukrainian Agrarian Business Club.

Taking into account the current harvest, in the 2025-2026 marketing year, Ukraine can produce about 1.3 million tons of sugar. This is 26.3% less than in the previous marketing year and 12.6% lower than the average level of the last five years.

In the current marketing year, the area sown with sugar beet decreased to 199 thousand hectares. This is 21.6% less than a year earlier and 12.4% lower than the average indicator for five years. Among the main reasons for this reduction are the introduction of quotas for the supply of sugar to EU countries, as well as more complex logistics in other markets.

At the same time, the yield of sugar beet increased to 49.3 t/ha, which is 2% more than in the previous season and 4.4% higher than the average indicator for the last five years. The total gross collection is forecast at 10.2 million tons.

After the introduction of quotas for sugar exports to the European Union, total exports in the 2024-2025 marketing year decreased to 629 thousand tons, which means a drop of 14.2%. In the 2025-2026 marketing year, this volume is forecast to decrease again – to 505 thousand tons.

The largest export destinations were African countries, which accounted for 32%, and the Middle East with a share of 29%. The share of EU countries was 17%.

In addition, domestic sugar consumption has also decreased. If by 2022 it was 1.1 million tons, then in 2025-2026 it will be 0.9 million tons. The main reason for this is the decrease in the population of Ukraine.
