“Teeth were filed, electricity was applied”: 25 torture chambers of the Russian army were discovered in Kharkiv Oblast

Brutal forms of physical, psychological and sexual violence were applied to people who were sent to Russian torture camps in Kharkiv region. This is stated in messages Office of the Prosecutor General.

In particular, the head of the department for combating crimes committed during the armed conflict, Spartak Borysenko, made public the details of this atrocity.

According to him, 25 torture chambers were discovered in Kharkiv region, where detainees were kept in inhumane conditions – they were hardly fed, and only technical water was given instead of drinking water. The torture they subjected the people to was horrific: their teeth were cut, their hands were tied and their bodies were lifted with metal hooks, their nails were pulled out, electric currents were passed through wires attached to various parts of their bodies, and they were beaten severely with rubber batons.

According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, every case of such abuse is now thoroughly investigated. We are working with the victims to hold Russia accountable for these crimes against humanity.

As part of the international investigation, prosecutors of the International Criminal Court are also collecting evidence of crimes against civilians of the Kharkiv region. In particular, the head of the investigation of international crimes committed in Ukraine, Brenda J. Hollis, inspected these torture chambers.

On September 12, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi held a meeting with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Karim Khan, during which the question of Russia’s responsibility for these war crimes committed on the territory of Ukraine was discussed.
