A Unified Center for Body Identification will be created in Ukraine

In Ukraine, work continues on the creation of the Unified Center for the Identification of Bodies (Remains). The discussion and implementation of effective solutions aimed at improving the body identification process took place within the framework of a two-day practical conference in Kyiv, informs press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Artur Dobroserdov, Commissioner for Issues of Persons Missing in Special Circumstances, noted that active cooperation with international organizations is ongoing to improve coordination and attract assistance. He also emphasized that the Unified Center for the Identification of Bodies (Remains) is being created in Ukraine, and one of the key tasks is the implementation of a unified body numbering system.

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Commissioner for Missing Persons under special circumstances form the state policy in the field of international humanitarian law in the part related to the search for missing persons”. – remarked Dobroserdov.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Leonid Tymchenko emphasized that the main purpose of the practical conference is the exchange of experience between specialists from all over Ukraine who deal with cases of missing persons, communication with families, the return of the bodies (remains) of defenders, as well as their identification.

“Currently, there are a large number of unidentified bodies, so coordinated work of all structural units, investigators, experts is necessary so that the work on identification of the dead does not stop at any one of the stages. The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to strengthen the capacities of expert services, trains new specialists in order to more quickly identify the bodies of defenders who enter Ukraine through the repatriation process“, Tymchenko noted.

Last year, more than 100 new experts joined the specialized laboratories of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which made it possible to significantly increase the pace of research on repatriated bodies.
