To restore the medical system, 14 billion dollars are needed in the next 10 years
During the panel discussion “Health as a prerequisite for recovery: mental health, rehabilitation and digital access to medical services”, the Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Lyashko said that the recovery of the Ukrainian medical system after the consequences of a full-scale war will require more than 14 billion dollars in the next 10 years.
Lyashko emphasized that Russia is purposefully destroying the medical infrastructure of Ukraine, destroying hospitals, “emergency rooms”, pharmacies, taking away equipment and medicines, as well as killing medical workers. The total losses of the medical field from the war are estimated at at least 17.8 billion dollars.
The Minister emphasized the critical importance of the support of international partners to ensure the functioning and development of the Ukrainian medical system. He recalled that over 27 months of the war, 1,618 medical facilities were damaged, and another 214 were completely destroyed. Medical institutions of Kharkiv, Donetsk, Mykolaiv, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions were the most affected.
