The Armed Forces of Ukraine have a special unit to protect cultural heritage
A special unit for the protection of cultural heritage has been created in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which will function within the framework of civil-military cooperation. The initiative is aimed at preserving the cultural values of the country in the conditions of war and preventing their destruction due to hostilities, are reported in the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
The new unit included military personnel with education and work experience in the field of culture, archeology, history, and museum work. Its main task is to coordinate actions aimed at protecting cultural heritage objects, as well as to develop and implement measures that will ensure their preservation even in the most difficult conditions.
The decision to create such a unit was made by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi. The initiative was approved by a joint directive of the Minister of Defense Rustam Umerov and the Commander-in-Chief. Before making this decision, large-scale consultations were held with international partners, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, as well as representatives of civil society.
As part of the work of the unit, active cooperation with international organizations, in particular UNESCO, is provided for the implementation of best practices in the preservation of historical monuments, museums and other important cultural objects.
