The Cabinet of Ministers has allocated over UAH 1.6 billion to support the new safe confinement of the Chernobyl NPP

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has allocated over UAH 1.6 billion to support the safety of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The funding includes work to secure a new safe confinement, as well as support for three power units, a spent nuclear fuel storage facility, and radioactive waste storage facilities. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy.

“Despite the difficult wartime conditions, Ukraine will continue work to maintain the three power units of the Chernobyl NPP, the spent nuclear fuel storage facility and radioactive waste storage facilities in a safe condition,” the department emphasized.

They emphasized that minimizing global radiation risks is directly related to stopping attacks on Ukrainian nuclear facilities. It also stated the need for an international response to nuclear safety violations, in particular by restricting Russia’s rights in the IAEA structures.

On February 15, French companies completed a preliminary assessment of the damage to the New Safe Confinement of the Chernobyl NPP. According to the results of the analysis, the facility, which took almost 20 years to build and cost more than $2 billion, currently does not perform its full protective functions.

Experts from Bouygues Travaux Publics and Vinci Construction Grands Projets, who participated in the design and construction of the arched structure, have identified critical restoration deadlines: the confinement must be fully functional by 2030. This is necessary to prevent corrosion of the steel arch and guarantee the long-term safety of the facility.
