EU condemns death of journalist Victoria Roshchina in Russian captivity

The European Union expressed its deep indignation at the death of Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roschyna, who died in Russian captivity, and called for an immediate investigation. This is stated in statements European External Action Service.

“The EU is shocked by the news of the death of Ukrainian freelance journalist Victoria Roschyna, who was arbitrarily and illegally detained by Russia. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues”, – the statement emphasizes.

The EU emphasized that Russia bears full responsibility for the fate of Victoria after her detention in the temporarily occupied territories. The European community demands an independent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of her death.

“The EU remains deeply concerned about Russia’s harassment, intimidation and violence against journalists and media workers covering news from the war zone… Human rights violations and abuses against journalists cannot go unpunished.”, – added the authors of the statement.

The death of Viktoria Roshchyna We will remind you that Viktoria Roshchyna disappeared in August 2023 in the temporarily occupied territories. Only in May 2024 did Russia confirm that she was in captivity. In 2022, the journalist was already kidnapped by the Russian military, but after 10 days of detention, she was released.

The news of Viktoria Roshchina’s death came on October 10, 2024, when Russian officials passed this information on to her father. Subsequently, this was confirmed by the Ukrainian side.
