The EU and Ukraine will launch joint graphite mining projects in March
The European Union and Ukraine are preparing to launch a number of joint projects in the field of critical raw materials as early as March 2025. About this stated European Commissioner for Industrial Strategy Stéphane Sejourne.
According to him, the main area of cooperation will be the extraction of graphite, which is strategically important for the EU. It is expected that by 2030, Ukraine will be able to provide up to 10% of European needs for this resource.
“We already have a number of projects that could be called European, some of them we could launch already in March. But this is not a new agreement. There is already an existing agreement”, – noted Sejourne.
According to him, these initiatives are based on the memorandum of understanding on raw materials, which Ukraine and the EU signed back in 2021. The European Commissioner confirmed that this agreement remains relevant and creates opportunities for the implementation of mutually beneficial projects.
“We will make several announcements in March, when I will release the plan for raw materials, in particular, regarding the first productions and the marking by the commission of certain projects that have been submitted to us. But there is already an agreement between the Ukrainians and the Europeans, and even outside of this agreement there are very specific projects that will be implemented.” – explained Sejourne.
